The One That Almost Got Away

I got this "thing" at an auction a few years ago and never quite knew what to do with it.  I only paid $5 for it but I loved how unusual it looked with all of the pretty detail.

It's a stand of some sort.  Too small to be an end table.  I thought about putting a round glass top on it and making it a coffee table.  But where?

It ended up in the Sitting Room off of the Master and has stayed there until I recently decided to list it on Craig's List.

It really was useless.

But I LOVE useless stuff!!! I CRAVE useless stuff!!! I HOARD useless stuff!!!

So after coming to my un-senses, I took it off of CL and gave it a facelift.  It was white before which limited the space where I could use it.  After giving it a couple coats of Minwax Stain in Provincial and two coats of clear Poly spray the lightbulb went off and I knew exactly where to put it.  (I should add that this is some sort of resin material - not wood. But I've learned that you can add stain to just about any old thing.)

Here it is in it's new home.

I love how the stain creeps into the crevices bringing out the wonderful detail.  It looks so much prettier now.

Stacked with books:

Done!

It works in my Family Room, which is a mix of Tuscan and Traditional.  I have a lot of different pieces in here, none of which match, but I love that look.  Kind of eclectic.

A lot of wrought iron.

I also changed the mantle up a little bit.  It used to look like this:

But I moved these from here:

to here:

And now it looks like this:

The large finial I got at a yardsale recently for $1.

Another view of the Family Room.

Pretty soon there's gonna be a toddler shaking things up in here and it's all gonna go...... to the island (of misfit decor).  Temporarily.

Thanks for stopping by and have a fabulicious day!
xoxo,
Kim

It is perfect. Funny how we can fall in love again with a piece we were previously done with. Can't tell you how many times I wished I hadn't got rid of something.

I have something similar to your little pedestal/column. I have it in the bathroom but it moves around a lot. I like the stain you used, it brings out the texture. Your mantel looks great, too!!

I have a tall thin pedestal that I think I got at Michaels about 15 years ago that is probably made of the same stuff, Kim. I love what you did to this. I've found mine to be pretty versatile and I think I've had it so long that sometimes I forget all about it and don't even give it a second look anymore.

Oh Yes, I agree! It looks very good in that room. It's just the right style now for sure. Don't you just love it when you find a whole new life for something in a new place? Great makeover!

When I started reading your post about the stand of some sort..... my thought was that you almost didn't buy it....I was so glad to see you had it... this is something I would buy so I really liked it. It was in the prefect place in the first picture I saw...then you said you listed on craigslist I was in shock ..what is she thinking.
Thank goodness you came to your senses. Trish

It is perfect in your family room and adding the Minwax just made it just right! That finial... $1... GET OUT!!!! I love it!

Your family room is very pretty and I like the unusual piece that you now have books on, it's really very attractive. When you showed the large finial that you got from the garage sale, I had to smile. I wonder if they wanted to be rid of it because to them it seems unusual and totally useless. Well, looks like the right person found it! It looks wonderful on your mantle.

Your "eclectic-look" looks very nice, and that little round table looks perfect. The bit of stain certainly made a big difference.

Kim I love your blog and your lovely home. I have been trying to email you, and it won't go through when I try to send it. I found your blog the day I moved to your town! I thought that was amazing. Also I need inspiration as I decorate my new place, which is a mobile home. It's a lot smaller than I had before and not cottage-style, so this should be interesting and challenging! I think the little stand looks great with the antiquing stain and it goes with your coffee table decor items! Blessings! Linda www.grandmalay.blogspot.com
