Lookie What I Did!

It's no secret that open shelving in kitchens is the trend these days.  I absolutely love how it looks and would even be bold enough to try it myself if the trend of openly displaying sippy cups with cars on them was also in style.  Since it's not, I took the baby step of removing the cabinet doors over my fridge instead.  This was the easiest peasiest lemon-squeeziest project of all time.  I didn't even need hubby's help........much.

Before, the top of the fridge was the gathering place amidst the dust for school papers that need to be signed (cause I'm orderly like that) and random photos that still need to be shoved in a random box in a random drawer - no I am NOT a scrapper - and an article out of last month's newspaper that I wanted to save because I might need to read it one day, as well as Birthday cards that are too cute to throw away but have nowhere to go until I decide it's finally time to throw them away.

Now,  the top of my fridge is clean, dust and clutter-free and I have a place to display my pretties.

Once I took off the doors there were gaping holes on either side so I used hubby's table saw to cut out some leftover white beadboard I had in the shed.

You can see in the pic above that it still needed some trim to cover the edges of the beadboard.  That's where hubby showed mercy and mitered some trim for me.

It will be fun to switch out the accessories for the seasons.  I've already changed it since I took these first pictures.

Here it is at Christmas and you can see the pretty trim that hubby added.

And here's how it looks today.

A super-easy, super-fun project!

Thanks for visiting and have a fabulicious day!

xoxo,
Kim

Great idea, Kim! Love the beadboard and trim. The cabinet over our refrigerator in our new place is so far back, it is absolutely useless to me to store things in. Unless I'm looking to store things I never, ever use!

It looks great! I love the open cabinet look too.

I like that - a lot! Open shelving would not work in my kitchen either. :D I did take the door off of the one over the sink and put a wine rack up there when I moved here years ago.
Enjoy your day.

What a great idea! It looks perfect and so tastefully arranged. You would never have known the cupboard once had doors. I have a very dust house because of our wood burning stove. I am afraid to try open shelves. It will be interesting to learn what you think after a trial period. I am not as brave nor as tidy as you (inside my cupboards).

Thank you so much for joining my blog. I value each follower!

Blessings, Dana

I love it, Kim! Now...if you want to be in for a shock go and look at my blog post from yesterday. My kitchen is torn down to nearly the studs! You've given me a sweet idea. LOVE IT!

So cute! You did a fabulous job! I want to do it so bad, but my house is 6 months old. I can't bring myself to chop into the brand new cabinets, and hubby might have a heart attack if he caught me doing it... :D

It looks great, Kim! You know I love open shelving since I (I mean, my HUBBY) took down one lone cabinet for me where I added open shelves. You'll love accessorizing it ... your vignette looks awesome!

Great idea for the cupboard in our kitchens that is always so awkward to get to. I like the way you decorated it & will be so much fun to arrange for the seasons.

That looks great! I opened my cabinets in my laundry room and used baskets to put things in. I covered the holes from the hardware and it works! I have the doors stored so I can put them back on some day. Your idea looks great and a lot better than the usual stuff people pile up there!
THX for coming by my blog! You have good taste- those pieces you like were expensive!!

That is a wonderful idea for finding an extra display area. I love the beadboard you used inside. Pretty vignettes too, both of them! Great job!

Looks great! I've been thinking of doing something similar in my kitchen, but we are so pressed for storage. Funny how such a simple change can make such a big difference.

Brilliant idea!! It just opens up that space. I've seen so many kitchens with open cabinets and they look soooo good but what about for those of use that use the doors to disguise the chaos? LOL, you have the best of both worlds with that little nook.

Above the refrigerator is the perfect place to try a cabinet without doors. Love how it turned out with some tweaking!
