Design Star Theory
Did anyone get a chance to see the first episode of Design Star on Sunday?? Well I did. In fact, I watched it with my hubby (he's an HTV fan too, well maybe by default). Anyway I have a theory about this show. My theory is that the most outrageous and over-the-top designs get the most flattering comments from the "judges". For example, did anyone see the hot pink geese on the Living Room wall? How about the abstract mural in the Dining Room that ran the scope of one wall, across the floor, and onto the other wall?? Yeah.
I'm curious. Which one of the judges do you think would like to have that in their home? I'm a huge fan of Candace Olson and even though her room makeovers have become somewhat predictable, I would bet a dollar to a doughnut that she'd rather go skinny-dipping with Chico than hang a pink goose on her living room wall. And Vern Yip - the man just oozes class. What would possess him to encourage that sort of lunacy? Now Genevieve I can sort of see. I remember her from her days on Trading Spaces and she did some wacky things back then - like glueing moss to a wall - but I expect more! More!
Obviously, Traditional is out the window and Modern/Contemporary is the way to win on this show. But do they have to sacrifice good taste? I've seen some Contemporary Rooms on RMS that I adore, even though I am every bit the Traditional decorator. I think you can be Modern and still have a cozy space. I just don't think there are any viewers out there watching this show and saying "yeah, I want that in MY dining room". Pretty much, we are all saying the same thing, "Are ya kidding me????" Am I right?
One last thought. Is it me or do some of these contestants bear a strong resemblance to their predecessors?? I.E. the Kim Myles look-alike, or the Jennifer Bertrand twin? I guess there's a mold-fitting requirement to get on the show. They are definitely looking for a certain "type". Btw, whatever happened to Jennifer? I know she had a baby, but why didn't her show ever materialize????
So, which Design Star contestant are you rooting for?? I wanna hear from you. Personally, I like Lannie (sp?). I think she'd be cool to hang out with and drink coffee with and go shoe shopping with. Do I have the makings to be a great judge or what?

I just finished watching the new DesignStar. I wasn't turned on by any of them. I wouldn't want red geese or wildlife hanging on my walls. And the dining room, I think that would make me nuts in just a few days. I'm stuck in my mold of shabby chic and the cottage look. Lots of girley things with bunches of roses. I really don't know who I think might win. No one empressed me today. Maybe Sunday.
Smiles,
Pat
Hi Kim,
I haven't seen it yet but do plan on it! It looks wonderful this season. Fun, fun! :)
Hope all is well with you and your family my friend.
~Melissa ;)
I rarely watch HGTV now days - I think it is best that I say no more. :-)

I did watch it. I've decided that a lot of what they do is try to sensationalize everything. What was that girl's name last year - the one everyone loved to hate? I really think they may have played that up, and she stayed on so much longer than anyone thought she would. I was so glad to see that Candace was a judge this year, but I was really dissapointed in the whole show Sun. Hopefully, it will get better (I don't thik it can get worse). laurie
Hi there Kim. I haven't seen it yet, but I plan to catch up. I have to say though that you are not the first to sort of bag on it. I don't have a ton of hope, but I probably will not stay away either. ;)
It's nice to hear from ya'. Miss having ya' around.
Have a wonderful weekend!
XOXO

You are!! (right, that is). I agree with all of your post.
I was completely wrong in my opinions of those rooms. I thought the geese were hideous. And that floor to wall mural was...was...ick! I didn't see that as something practical at all. And shouldn't design be somewhat practical? Unless you are super rich with 12 homes, wouldn't you get tired of that?
And yea, I like Lonnie, too. Maybe cuz she's older like me. There comes a level of maturity and style with age (sometimes!) and she seems cool. AND, AND...I thought the same thing about the look-a-likes! I was wondering the same thing about Jennifer. I'd like to know what happened to her.
Wish I could watch this show with you...sounds like we think the same!
Have a great weekend!

Hi Kim! Though I love HGTV and Candice Olson is my favorite designer ever, I just can't watch any of these crap formulaic competition shows. I hate the unrealistic challenges and manufactured drama, it's one of the reasons I don't watch "regular" TV and I can't stand that these horrible shows are now staples of HGTV and Food Network. I am sorry they felt the need to jump on the bandwagon, I'd much rather watch someone who knows what they are doing put a room together.
ACK!! I didn't realize it had even started yet!! Oh, I can't believe I missed it. Pink birds in the home, good heavens I need to see a replay of that one.

Kim, I did watch it too! I agree with all your points!!! There's not NO way I would have Pink birds on my wall...nor do I think any of those designer judges would either!!! I am so over HGTV and the "new" crap...bring back some good decorating, hgtv!!!! Nancy
Ha! Your comments crack me up! I Tivoed the episode and have to still sit down and watch it. But I have heard some great comments on blogland regarding the episode. Gotta catch up with it. I did see a commercial where they showed the pink geese! Ug!! P.S. Like the new header!! Hugs!
Love the new blog look.
I am starting a NEW Mr. Linky party. It will begin on Aug 10th so everyone will have a week and a half to think about their first post. I have a poll up for votes on which button should be the new button. The "party" is called The Knock Off Knock Out-where THRIFTY meets creative sensation. Go over and learn more about the new weekly event and I would appreciate if you would cast your vote and HELP pick the new button design and its the last week for the July GIVE-A-Way, if you would like to be a part of that event..

I totally agree with you - It seems contemporary is the clear style winner for the season so far, and the contestants are more worried about how the room will look on camera, versus how it would look in a real home.
I love debating about Design Star - they're uber talented, but their choices under pressure are rather SURPRISING!
Hey Kim...me again. Just wanted to let you know I've given you an award. Please stop over at my blog to check it out!
